Autonomous Loading And Unloading In-Truck System

Autonomous Loading And Unloading In-Truck System

This project represents a collaborative case study, developed from January to Jun 2018, aiming to benchmark the state of the art in logistic autonomation processes, and to analyze real life practice in Sweden. Interviews, user observations and a field visit represent the data acquisition methods, embracing Design Thinking as the guiding methodology. Upon identification of the needs, constraints and technological possibilities from both theory and practice, a new truck concept is created. The innovative in-truck system addresses challenges such as independent loading and unloading in all technological conditions, from no additional equipment required, to fully automated warehouses, relieving the driver from the heavy-lifting part of the job. A secondary focus lies on the ability to maneuver and rearrange cargo automatically, adapting to unforeseen circumstances. The project is a collaboration between Mälardalen University in Sweden and Volvo Group Trucks Technology, and contribute with an outcome consisting of a 3D model, a video animation, a technical specifications brochure and a research paper that can be shown for those who are interested in a longer lecture.

You can also see the lessons that we have learned regarding the management of the project, working in a team, collaborating with external partners, creating a valuable idea, building the prototype and sharing it with our stakeholders.
