Reading Habits

Reading Habits

Reading time: 5 minutes

  English      Română

I just realise what is the whole story behind implementing new habits and how they are working. I have read many articles about how people start routines, by adding small steps every day, and how people have to restart it again if they have skipped one day from the total of 30 days of practice ( 30 days is largely considered a minimum for our brain to conceive a routine).

This morning I just had the epiphany of having, for a while, a new routine in my life, reading. I have never been a big fan of reading, especially because most of the time (I can say all the time), I was obliged to read. Those moments happened usually during the summer holiday, when the mandatory reading provided by school was to heavy for the summer time. And I believe that neither the topic was something to captivate me. I wasn’t impressed by reading a traditional crime novel from 1930 (“The Hatchet” by Mihail Sadoveanu) or about Mircea Eliade (Romanian writer) and his shortsighted teenager. I really did not emphatise with them at that age and they were such a torment to be read. I have been fascinated by my sister who always had stacks of books near bed, and every night she was browsing through them, some time changing even the books (even though it wasn’t finished), to not get bored with the same topic for too many days in a row.

However, it doesn’t mean that I wasn’t a good student who was going to all Romanian classes and was reading all the required lectures (almost) in time, doing it for getting proper grades. I was usually doing it because I didn’t want the books to affect my grades in the end, and also because I knew that at some point, the big national exam will come (in the end of the high school), and it is quite complicated to pass it if you don’t really read the actual literature. Something that I always hated was to write about a subject that I haven’t read myself, and just repeating what the teacher said, because everything was very abstract in my mind. But I have to admit that there was one novel that I didn’t have time to read, so I watched the movie instead.

Continuing with today’s epiphany…
And what a surprise! In the context of my Innovation and Design Master’s Programme, I guess everybody is thinking about how I sit and draw all day, and I am eventually searching for things to innovate. Well, it is not as fairy as it sounds (or it is but not from this perspective). Recently I read an article about how the Design profession will change into a new hybrid one (in the end I will leave a link where I will explain it more), and there is a need to combine the research with design in order to get proper results for the world that we live in nowadays.

Thus, since I started the master’s programme I needed to read a lot. And neither novels or books, but bibliographies full of scientific journals, which are basically the highest form of academic information (and trusted as well). I started to write myself in this scientific format, and I got stuck in all the information, how to make sense out of it and how to organise the references. While I was in Romania, I haven’t even heard for once talking about this kind of scientific libraries, which, thanks God, are available for many domains. It would’ve been so helpful if I could find them at that point, to have a better understanding of the things that were happening in my field of study and to clarify some things that seemed strange into my eyes.

It is fascinating and I really like the whole story about doing research, because I am finally understanding the mechanisms behind, both in the present and the future, but the most amazing part is when I start to correlate them with the past. I think the process is extremely psychological and I am really triggered to dive into knowledge related to creativity, design, visual communication, personal development, education and so on. Since a few months back I started to read every night before I went to sleep, and I’m doing it not because a teacher is gonna ask me to present it the next morning, but because I do really like what i read and I want to develop my own knowledge.

I think this phenomenon has something to do with my critical mindset that has been continuously improving since I started this programme. Until then I was a well-behaved and polite child who thought that every writer was right. Now I understand how to really interpret a text and how much I should assume or not out of it. I realised which ones are the lyric voices that I like and which are the ones that I don’t empathise with. Now I am looking forward to steal tips on how I can build my own texts and how to frame my ideas in order to make it more clear.

I guess this means to grow up…
